Indian markets ended higher on Wednesday after a three-day decline, supported by global cues and investor optimism over a potential RBI rate cut. Mid- and small-cap stocks outperformed, driven by strong earnings and easing valuations ahead of the central bank's policy meet.

Sensex settled with marginal gains of 260.74 pts at 80,998.25 and Nifty 50 was up 77.70 pts to close at 24,620.20

Large and midcap indices delivered similar 1-year returns, with Nifty Midcap 100 slightly outperforming Nifty 100. Smallcaps underperformed due to valuation concerns. FIIs favored largecaps amid expensive mid- and smallcap valuations, driving market preference toward stability.

Top gainers & losers todayIndusInd, Axis Bank, Trent, HDFC Life and Eicher Motors led the gainers of Nifty 50 components, while Hindalco, Maruti, Bajaj Auto, JSW Steel and Shriram Finance declined. Gensol and IREDA are also in focus.

Midcap counters such as Bharat Forge, Coforge, National Aluminium, Mazagon Dock, SAIL, Vodafone Idea, Suzlon Energy, RVNL, BSE, Hindustan Zinc, BDL, Premier Energies, Cochin Shipyard, Ola Electric, OIL and Waaree Energies slumped up to 10.16 per cent.

BSE Smallcap fell 2% last week, with 821 stocks declining up to 43%. Market sentiment remained weak due to US recession fears and tariff wars. Notable laggards included BMW Industries, Triveni Turbine, Orchid Pharma, and Coffee Day Enterprises.

In a holiday-shortened week, 392 BSE500 stocks declined, with IndusInd Bank plunging 28%. IT led sectoral losses amid US slowdown fears. Meanwhile, only 95 stocks gained, including KIMS and Aavas Financiers, while Tata Teleservices and Sun TV remained flat.

Kotak Institutional Equities reported that IndusInd Bank, JSW Steel, Apollo Hospitals, and Asian Paints have over 5% pledged promoter holdings. The total pledged holdings in BSE-500 companies stood at ₹1.63 trillion in December 2024, showing a slight decline from the previous quarter.

Promoter pledged holdings in BSE-500 firms slipped to 0.84% in Dec 2024, according to a report by Kotak Institutional Equities revealed.

The Q3FY25 results for mid and small cap companies saw more downgrades compared to large caps against the previous quarter, as majority of the companies were facing either top line and margin pressures.

Indian markets closed nearly flat as IT gains offset consumer stock declines. Persistent FII outflows, weak earnings, and global trade worries kept sentiment cautious, while small and midcap stocks lagged due to valuation concerns.

Bandhan Bank, UCO Bank, Natco Pharma, Ircon International Ltd, IRCTC, ACC, BEML, Titagarh Rail Systems and Tanla Platforms were among BSE MidSmallcap 400 companies hitting their 52-week lows today.

Out of the 938 stocks in the BSE Smallcap index analysed by ETMarkets, 909 stocks ended the week in the red with the highest fall of 41% witnessed in NGL Fine-Chem.

Stocks including TCS, Hindalco, UltraTech, Bank of Baroda, United Breweries, Piramal Enterprises, Paytm, RBL Bank and more will be in the spotlight on Friday, February 14.

Balu Forge Q3 Results: Balu Forge posted a 134% YoY jump in Q3FY25 net profit at ₹59 crore, with revenue surging 74% to ₹256 crore. EBITDA margins expanded to 26.47%, driven by operational efficiencies and high-margin products. The company also announced strategic diversification plans.
