In the Nifty 50 index, 23 stocks ended in the green, while 27 stocks closed in the red in today's trade.

From here on, if Nifty has to sustain at higher levels, contribution from the heavyweight banking space is a must. Since it is struggling around the bearish gap, it is better to wait for further clarification to project higher levels in Nifty, says Osho Krishan, Sr. Analyst - Technical & Derivative Research, Angel One.

On the sectoral front, BSE Realty index added 4 percent, BSE Telecom index rose 3.8 percent, BSE FMCG and Power indices gained 1.5 percent each.

The Nifty Pharma index closed 0.42 per cent up at 19048.4.

The Nifty Auto index closed 0.18 per cent up at 20621.35.

The Nifty Bank index closed 0.23 per cent down at 46811.75.

The Nifty IT index closed 0.22 per cent down at 38045.65.

BPCL, HCL Tech, Maruti Suzuki, Asian Paints and JSW Steel were among the top losers on NSE in today's trade.

Yasho Industries, NDR Auto Components, SML Isuzu, Tarmat Ltd and Khaitan(India), hit their fresh 52-week highs during the day.

Benchmark indices rise slightly, Nifty 50 at 22,258.10, BSE Sensex at 73,291.38, with sectoral gains and losses.

More than 500 companies across all sectors will be revealing their third quarter financial results next week.

The Nifty IT index closed 0.64 per cent up at 30779.95.
