Sensex, Nifty updates on 09 May 2024: Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty tumbled about 1.5 per cent on Thursday amid heavy foreign fund outflows and selling in HDFC Bank, Larsen & Toubro and Reliance Industries. Declining for the third day running, the BSE Sensex dropped 1,062.22 points or 1.45 per cent to settle at 72,404.17. During the day, it tanked 1,132.21 points or 1.54 per cent to 72,334.18. The NSE Nifty dived 345 points or 1.55 per cent to 21,957.50. During the day, it tumbled 370.1 points or 1.65 per cent to 21,932.40. From the Sensex basket, Larsen & Toubro tanked over 5 per cent after March quarter earnings. Asian Paints, JSW Steel, ITC, Bajaj Finance, IndusInd Bank, Tata Steel, NTPC, Bajaj Finserv, HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries and Power Grid were among the laggards. In contrast, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, State Bank of India, Infosys and HCL Tech were the gainers.

The quarterly earnings season commenced in the second week of April and remains ongoing, with more than 260 companies slated to announce their fourth-quarter earnings throughout this week.

Benchmark indices were sharply lower on Friday, tracking a plunge in global markets on inflation fears and ahead of the US May CPI data. In late morning deals, the BSE Sensex fell over 850 points to 54,461, while the NSE Nifty 50 shed 200 points to hover around 16,250.

On the S&P BSE Sensex, no stock hit a fresh 52-week high or 52-week low. While on BSE Sensex, a total of 47 stocks rose to their respective 52-week highs.

During the week gone by, all the sectoral indices ended in the red with BSE Metal and Power indices falling 13 percent each. BSE Telecom index shed 6.7 percent and Realty index declined 5.8 percent.
